Beneath Atauro's Blue
Atauro (Portuguese: Ilha de Ataúro, Tetum: Illa Ataúru, Indonesian: Pulau Atauro), also known as Kambing Island (Pulau Kambing), is a small oceanic island and municipality of Timor-Leste, located north of Dili in the Lesser Sunda Islands. It lies between the Indonesian islands of Alor and Wetar, with the nearest island, Liran, only 13 km away. Atauro became a separate municipality on January 1, 2022, after previously being part of Dili.
Stretching 22 km long and 5–10 km wide, with an area of 150 km², Atauro’s rugged landscape is the result of eroded, uplifted submarine volcanoes. Its narrow ridges and steep slopes rise to Mount Manucoco, the island’s highest point at 999 meters. Extensive uplifted coralline limestone covers much of the island, while patches of tropical semi-evergreen mountain forest remain in sheltered valleys. Lower areas feature dry forests, eucalyptus savanna woodlands, limestone outcrops, and cultivated land near villages.
The island is divided into five sucos Biqueli, Beloi, Macadade, Maquili, and Vila Maumeta with Vila Maumeta as the largest village. Other communities include Pala, Uaroana, Arlo, Adara, and Berau. A single paved road connects Vila Maumeta to Pala, while paths link the other villages. During Indonesian rule, an airstrip existed near Vila Maumeta but is now unusable.
Atauro is renowned for its extraordinary marine biodiversity. Its fringing reefs, ranging from 30 to 150 meters wide, shelter over 300 species of reef fish the highest recorded diversity per site in the world. However, marine plastic pollution threatens these waters, coming mainly from Dili and nearby Indonesian islands.
1.2. Atauro's underworld Access to the island is by ferry from Dili, a two-hour journey, or by fishermen’s boats. Atauro is gaining attention as an eco-tourism destination, attracting scuba divers eager to explore its rich underwater life. Despite its natural beauty, the island faces challenges such as landslides, water shortages, and limited infrastructure. Freshwater springs exist near Berau, with minor reservoirs in Macadade and Mount Manucoco’s eastern slopes, but supply remains limited, especially in the dry season.
Atauro stands as a blend of rugged nature, cultural life, and marine wonder a hidden gem of Timor-Leste.
